4 Fair Ways to Split Players Into Teams

Picking teams is where arguments start. Each of these takes a minute and nobody is picked last in front of everyone.

1. Random draw

Put every player in the name picker with “remove the winner after each spin” ticked. The first name goes to Team A, the next to Team B, and so on. This is the fairest way when skill levels are similar.

2. Skill tiers

Split players into strongest, middle and newest players. Spin within each group in turn, alternating teams. The teams end up random but balanced.

3. Captains with a random order

Spin to choose the captains, then spin again to see who picks first. Use a snake order (A, B, B, A, A, B…) so the second captain isn’t always behind.

4. Number off

Spin the number wheel from 1 to the number of teams for each player. It’s quick for big PE classes, but teams may end up uneven, so even them out at the end.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you pick random teams fairly?

Put every player in a random name picker, remove each name after it’s drawn, and alternate the picks between teams. If skill levels are very different, sort players into groups first and draw from each group in turn.

What sport should I play?

Spin the Sports to play list. Remove anything you can’t play where you are, such as swimming without a pool, and spin again until something sounds good.

What are good PE games for kids?

Capture the flag, freeze tag, relay races, four square, sharks and minnows and obstacle courses are popular, need little kit and work for big groups. All are on the PE games list.

Is a coin toss wheel fair?

Yes. The coin toss list has two slices of equal size, and each spin uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so heads and tails each have a 50% chance.

Can I use the wheel for a sports pool?

You can use it to hand out teams or squares. If money is involved, check your local rules first, because the law on paid pools differs between states and countries.

Can I add my own sports or games?

Yes. Type one item per line in the box, or edit a preset, then press Spin. Press Share to copy a link to your wheel.
