Secret Santa Generator
This free Secret Santa generator draws names in seconds. Nobody gets their own name, couples can be kept apart, and each person sees only their own match, on one phone or by private link.
- No emails or sign-up
- Never draws yourself
- Couples kept apart
- Draw stays on your device
One pair per line, such as a couple or two people who live together. Rules work both ways.
Hi !
Your organiser sent you this private link. Make sure nobody else is looking, then tap the button.

3. Pass the device round
After the draw, each person taps their own name to see who they are buying for, then hides it and passes the phone on. Nobody else sees the match, including the organiser.
Tap your name to see your match
Are you ?
Only this person should look at the screen now.

Organiser only: show all pairs (spoils the surprise)
Use this when you are not taking part and need to send each person their match.
Remote group? Send each person a private link
Copy each link and send it only to that person, for example in a direct message. The link shows them their match. Links are not locked, so anyone who opens someone else’s link would see that match.
How it works
How to Run Secret Santa With This Generator
- Type everyone’s name, one per line. First names are fine; add an initial if two people share a name.
- Add rules (optional): one pair per line for people who must not draw each other, such as
Anna, Benfor a couple. - Add a budget and date if you like. Everyone sees them with their match.
- Press Draw names. The whole draw happens at once, so nobody can get their own name and every rule is kept.
- Pass the phone round. Each person taps their name, checks it’s them, sees their match, then taps “Got it, hide and pass on”. A tick shows who has looked.
Why it’s fair
What Makes This Draw Fair
- Secure randomness. Names are shuffled with your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, the same one the wheel uses.
- Every valid draw is equally likely. The generator shuffles everyone and only keeps a shuffle in which every rule holds, so it never favours one arrangement.
- Impossible rules are caught. If your rules leave no valid draw, you’re told before anything is shown.
- Nothing is sent to us. The draw is made and kept on your device. There’s no account, no email and no server copy.
The problem with hats and wheels
Why Not Just Use a Hat or a Spinning Wheel?
Drawing Secret Santa one name at a time goes wrong more often than people expect. We worked out how often:
Paper in a hat: 63%
If everyone draws a slip at the same time, the chance that at least one person pulls their own name is about 63% for any group of 4 or more. That is the classic “derangement” result: only about 1 in e (36.8%) of shuffles leave nobody with themselves.
Wheel, name by name: about 1 in 9
Spinning for each person and removing names as you go fixes the first problem but creates another: the last person can be left with only their own name. In our simulation of 200,000 draws this happened 13.9% of the time with 4 people, 11.2% with 6 and 7.6% with 10.
Spinning in public: no secret
A wheel on a shared screen shows everyone who got whom. That’s fine for picking who opens a present first, but it ruins Secret Santa.
This generator avoids all three: it draws everyone at once, keeps only draws where nobody has themselves, and shows each match privately. For open, everyone-watches picks, use the random name picker instead.
Rules
Couples, Housemates and Last Year’s Match
Add a rule for any two people who shouldn’t draw each other. Rules work both ways, so Anna, Ben means Anna won’t draw Ben and Ben won’t draw Anna. You can also list three people on one line, like Anna, Ben, Chloe, to keep a whole household apart.
To avoid repeating last year, add last year’s pairs as rules. This is slightly stricter than needed, because it also stops the reverse match, but in most groups that still leaves plenty of valid draws.
Too many rules can make a draw impossible. With 3 people, for example, if Anna can’t draw Ben or Chloe, there is nobody left for her. The generator checks this and tells you to remove a rule or add people.
Group size
Odd Numbers and Small Groups
Secret Santa works with any number of people from 3 upwards, odd or even. It isn’t made of pairs: each person gives one gift and receives one, so the draw forms loops, like Anna → Dev → Femi → Anna.
Three people is the smallest group, but there are only two possible draws. Each person can work out the whole draw from their own match, so there’s no real surprise. With 4 people there are 9 possible draws, and with 6 there are 265, so 4 or more is better if the secret matters.
Every kind of group
Family, Office and Remote Secret Santa
Everyone in the same room
Use one phone or tablet and pass it round. Each person sees only their own match, and the ticks show who still needs to look. The draw stays saved on that device, so someone who forgets can tap their name again.
Remote or spread-out groups
Open “Remote group? Send each person a private link” after the draw and send each link by direct message. Links aren’t locked, so if the organiser is also playing and wants to stay surprised, they should copy links without opening them.
Office Secret Santa
Make it opt-in, agree one budget everyone can afford, and set a drop-off point and date. Workplace-friendly ideas: snacks, a good mug, a plant, a book, desk accessories. Label every gift with the recipient’s name.
Kids, classes and clubs
An adult runs the draw and passes the device round. Keep the budget small, check any school rules about gifts, and ask each child for three things they like so nobody is stuck. See our classroom wheels for more.
Before you draw
Secret Santa Rules to Agree First
- Who’s in. Ask people to opt in rather than adding everyone by default.
- One budget. Pick a single number everyone can afford and stick to it.
- Date and handover. Agree when and how gifts are swapped, including for anyone who can’t attend.
- Wish lists. A short “three things I like” note helps everyone buy well.
- No swapping matches. Swaps can leave someone without a gift.
- A drop-out plan. See the next section.
Changes after the draw
If Someone Drops Out After the Draw
If nobody has bought anything yet, the simplest fix is to remove the person and draw again. Everyone must look again, so tell the group.
If gifts are already bought, close the gap instead of redrawing:
- Find who was buying for the person who left. Call them the giver.
- Find who the person who left was buying for. Call them the receiver.
- The giver now buys for the receiver. Everyone else is unchanged.
This works unless the giver and the receiver are the same person, which happens when two people drew each other. Then that person needs a new match, so swap them into another loop or redraw.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone draw their own name?
No. Every draw is checked so that nobody is matched with themselves.
Does Secret Santa work with an odd number of people?
Yes. Any number from 3 upwards works, because each person gives one gift and receives one. It doesn’t need pairs.
What is the minimum number of people?
Three, but with 3 people everyone can work out the whole draw. Four or more keeps it a real secret.
Do people need an email address or an account?
No. Nobody signs up and no emails are sent. Use one shared device or send private links by message.
Does the organiser see who got whom?
Only if they choose to. The organiser view and the private links both show matches, so an organiser who is playing should avoid opening them.
Where is the draw stored?
Only in your browser on the device you used. Press “Delete this draw” to remove it. Private links contain the one match they show.
Someone forgot who they got. What now?
On the same device, they can tap their name again. With private links, they can reopen their link.
Is the draw really random?
Yes. It uses your browser’s secure random number generator, and every arrangement that follows your rules is equally likely. See how our draws work.
