Splitting teams
How to Split 32 Teams Between Friends
32 divides evenly between 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 people. For other group sizes, decide what to do with the leftover teams before anyone spins.
Teams per person
| People | Teams each | Leftover |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 16 | None |
| 3 | 10 | 2 left over |
| 4 | 8 | None |
| 5 | 6 | 2 left over |
| 6 | 5 | 2 left over |
| 7 | 4 | 4 left over |
| 8 | 4 | None |
| 10 | 3 | 2 left over |
| 12 | 2 | 8 left over |
Fair options for leftover teams
- Leave them out. Spin the leftovers first and set them aside, so nobody gets an extra team.
- Spin for them. After the main round, spin the name picker once for each leftover team.
- Use a snake order. Pick order runs 1 to 6, then 6 to 1, so whoever went last in one round goes first in the next.
Decide the rules and the pick order before the first spin, and spin where everyone can see it.
The odds
How Often Will My Team Come Up?
On the full wheel every team has a 1 in 32 chance, which is 3.125%, on each spin. Here’s how that adds up.
Your team at least once
| Spins | Chance |
|---|---|
| 5 | 14.7% |
| 10 | 27.2% |
| 20 | 47.0% |
| 32 | 63.8% |
| 50 | 79.6% |
| 100 | 95.8% |
Even after 32 spins there’s about a 1 in 3 chance your team hasn’t come up. On average it takes about 130 spins to see all 32 teams at least once.
Two people landing on the same team
| People spinning once | Chance of a repeat |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.1% |
| 4 | 17.7% |
| 5 | 28.0% |
| 7 | 50.6% |
| 10 | 79.2% |
With 7 people, a repeat is more likely than not. To give everyone a different team, tick “remove the winner”.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
How many teams are in the NFL?
There are 32 teams: 16 in the AFC and 16 in the NFC. Each conference has four divisions, East, North, South and West, with four teams each.
How do I pick a random NFL team?
Press Spin on the wheel above. It starts with all 32 teams. Each one has the same 1 in 32 chance unless you change the list or add weights.
Can I spin only AFC, NFC or one division?
Yes. Tap AFC, NFC or any of the eight division buttons above the wheel. The wheel switches to just those teams.
Can I remove a team after it’s picked?
Yes. Tick “remove the winner after each spin” and each team leaves the wheel once it’s chosen. This is the easiest way to hand out all 32 teams with no repeats.
Is the NFL wheel really random?
Each spin uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator. The result is chosen before the animation starts, and the spin speed doesn’t change it. Our fairness page explains how it works.
Does the wheel show team logos?
No. It uses team names only. Logos are trademarks of the NFL and its teams. FairWheelPick isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by the NFL or any team.
Can I use it for a football pool?
You can use it to hand out teams fairly. If money is involved, check your local rules first, because the law on paid pools differs between states and countries.
