How to Pick a Random Letter

1

Pick your letters

Start with A–Z or press a Quick list: vowels, consonants, lowercase, or A–Z without Q, X and Z for word games.

2

Choose repeats

Keep repeats on for independent rounds, or tick Remove winner after each spin so no letter comes up twice in a game.

3

Spin

Press Spin. Every letter on the wheel has the same chance, and each result is saved in the Results tab.

The odds

How Likely Is Each Letter?

On the full A–Z wheel each letter has a 1 in 26 chance, about 3.8%. A vowel comes up 5 times in 26, about 19%. On the vowels-only list, each vowel has a 20% chance.

That’s different from how often letters appear in English words, where E and T are far more common than Q or Z. A letter wheel treats every letter the same, which is why word games often take out the hardest letters.

Quick lists

  • A–Z: 26 letters, 3.8% each
  • Vowels: A, E, I, O, U
  • Consonants: the other 21 letters
  • No Q, X, Z: 23 letters for category games
  • Lowercase: a to z for early readers

Ways to Use a Letter Wheel

Category games

Spin a letter, then everyone writes a name, place, animal and thing starting with it before time runs out. Use the No Q, X, Z list so every round is playable.

Phonics

Spin and say the letter’s sound, think of a word that starts with it, or match uppercase and lowercase cards.

Vocabulary and spelling

Pupils give a word that starts, ends or contains the letter, or a word from this week’s topic.

I spy and scavenger hunts

Spin a letter, then find something in the room or the garden that starts with it.

Drawing and charades

Draw or act out something beginning with the letter for others to guess.

Alphabet order

Turn on no repeats and spin all 26 letters to set a random order for a game or rota.

Fairness

Is the Letter Wheel Random?

Yes. Letters are drawn by your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator before the wheel moves, so how hard you spin doesn’t matter. Run 10,000 test spins in the Fairness tab to see each letter land near 3.8%.

Can I use another alphabet?

Yes. Clear the list and type the letters of any alphabet, one per line. The wheel works with any characters.

Can I add letter pairs or blends?

Yes. Each line is one entry, so sh, ch and th work for phonics practice.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pick a random letter?

Press Spin on the A–Z wheel above. Each of the 26 letters has the same 3.8% chance.

Can I spin only vowels or consonants?

Yes. Press Vowels or Consonants under Quick lists, then spin.

Which letters should I remove for word games?

Many players take out Q, X and Z because few words start with them. The No Q, X, Z quick list does this for you.

Yes. Tick “Remove winner after each spin”. Each letter leaves the wheel until you press Restore removed.

Can I use lowercase letters?

Yes. Press Lowercase under Quick lists, or type the letters any way you like.

Is the letter generator random?

Yes. It uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator, and the Fairness tab lets you test it.
